When Amber approached Laurin and I about a festival completely dedicated to sugar, we were in! Today we indulged on countless sweet treats at the Sugar High Festival. Basically, over 70 sweet treat vendors came to one expo location, set up shop, and fed our sugar addiction! We purchased tickets that allowed us to enjoy 30 samples from various vendors. There were cookies, brownies, cupcakes, freeze dried candies, flavored popcorns, chocolates, etc. Our favorite was a beignet from Thirst. It was literally fried right in front of us then doused in cinnamon and sugar. It was so good! There was even a local baker from Utah there who had participated in a Netflix show recently that Jonas watches called "Is It Cake?". Of course I had to get a photo with him. Yet, more than all the yummy treats, I enjoyed just hanging out with Amber and Laurin. There was a time I wondered if this would ever happen. Being in a non-traditional family has had its ups and downs. There were difficult moments for all of us as we adjusted to being a family. Like any other family, some of those frustrations could be considered normal, but with the added complication of non-biological ties, those frustrations were, at times, amplified. Mischaracterizations, projections, villianizing were all apart of the process as we all struggled to find our way, but through the grace of our Savior and with time on our side, we have found a way to be a family. We have found a way to allow each other the grace that we so desperately want for ourselves. We are not perfect! There are still moments of frustration and hurt, but we know we have each other's back. We love each other - not because biology told us to, but because we choose to...every day. The sweet moments of today weren't necessarily in the treats, but in the happy heart I felt as I strolled through booths and booths of desserts with my daughters.
