March Madness

As if my birthday celebrations and my parents' 50th wedding celebration weren't enough, we continued to enjoy any celebrations that came our way...starting with St. Patrick's Day! I love that Jonas still enjoys these little holiday celebrations. They have been paired way down, but he continues to look forward to them. Like past years, Lucky the Leprechaun paid us a little visit and sent Jonas on a quick treasure hunt in the morning. He left him with some yummy treats and green apparel for the day. I made a themed breakfast before sending him off to school.

I then went to pick up Beau. I watch Beau on Tuesdays and Thursday. Often times, we just head back to the house to play. He enjoys the toy room and the ample space to roam outside, but that day, we headed to the Springville Museum of Art to attend a little toddler class. We learned about colors, made a rainbow craft, then searched the museum for the colors in our craft. I love that I get to do these little things with my grandkids. I don't watch the Irons as often any more, but I love every chance I get to spend with them.

That evening, I made another Irish-ish themed meal to round out our St. Patrick's Day celebrations. We had "bangers" or sausage (brats) with potatoes (because duh!) and a medley of veggies in the Irish flag colors. I even got Jonas a green soda and key lime pie for dessert.

On Wednesday, March 18th, Jonas had a half-day. He decided to cash in his gift certificates to Provo Beach Resort that he got for Christmas. He invited his friend, Lane, to join him. The boys spent over 5 hours playing arcades, surfing, play laser tag, bowling, and more. Jonas was a little sad that there weren't more people playing laser tag because they only really got to play one round with other people and that is one of his favorite activities to do there. Still, the boys had a blast!

The fun just kept rolling that week! On Friday, March 20th, Jonas and I celebrated the first day of Spring with a little treat. We started this little tradition a couple of years ago. At the start of each season, we get a seasonal treat to enjoy. This season, we got a lemon cookie and lemonade.

That evening, we reverted back to winter again when we attended an Utah Mammoth hockey game. These were the free tickets we got from attending the practice back in January. Unfortunately, they lost again, but we still had fun at the game! (Yes...Jeff came too; he's just ok not to be in the pictures.)

The next morning, we were again reminded it was Spring and dove into the ongoing task of preparing the yard for the new season. We specifically focused on trimming our trees. We try to get this done before they blossom, but with our busy schedule and the unseasonably warm temperatures, the trees were already in bloom. Still, they had to be trimmed and this year Jonas jumped in full force. He has always been helpful, but he has been limited on what he could do because of his size and ability. This year, he really got in the trees (literally) and trimmed right along side Jeff and I. As much as I would love to hire out some of this work, I'm grateful that we can work together as a family in this way...and I'm really grateful that we have raised kids that are willing to work hard too.

Monday, March 23rd, was Jonas's final Parent Engagement Night at the elementary school. I still can't believe that we are checking off all these "final" elementary moments. Each year, the school hosts an evening that kids bring their families to. This year, in addition to the evening event, all the students and their parents have been reading the book Charlotte's Web at home for the past 3 weeks. This was the culmination of that effort. The school was decorated like a barn and there were several stations to rotate through with various activities. To be honest, many of these activities were a little too juvenile for Jonas so we skipped them. In fact, I was honestly surprised that he wanted to go to the event. I would have been fine either way. However, there were some that he willingly participated in. In fact, as we left, he was debating on going back in to do a few more, but when we ran through the list we received of all the stations, he realized that he didn't need to do more. I think he still straddles two worlds: the innocent childlike world and the adventurous pre-teen era. That was a little evident tonight.

Friday, March 27th, was another "last". It was Jonas's last elementary program; although, it was more of a presentation than a program. For 5th graders, their program consists of a History Fair or Wax Museum. They get to choose a significant historic figure to research. They then draft a quick 30-second speech and create a slideshow presentation. Finally, they dress up like that figure and get to present their research to parents and other students. Jonas chose to research a Polish man, Vitold Pilecki. Jonas had just finished reading a historical fiction book about the Polish Resistance during WWII (Uprising by Jennifer Nielsen). He has always been fascinated with WWII history so we looked for significant persons that played key roles in that war. Vitold Pilecki was actually one of five people who organized the Polish Resistance. He also voluntarily entered Auschwitz as a prisoner to smuggle out information to Allied forces. He was a pretty incredible man who stood up for what he believed in...even when it ultimately cost him his life. Jonas was super excited to do this project. He also had to create an "artifact". He chose to assemble a "radio" because Mr. Pilecki actually built a radio while he was in Auschwitz with smuggled parts. It was so rewarding to see his presentation and know all the hard work he put into it.

Finally, Saturday, March 28th, Jeff and I attended our second seasonal production at Hale Center Theater. I love that we got these tickets for each other for Christmas. It's something fun to look forward to throughout the year. This production was Peter Pan Goes Wrong. It was hilarious! The basic premise was that this was opening night for a theater company's rendition of Peter Pan...and everything that could go wrong, did. We laughed consistently throughout the whole show.

That's a wrap on March!...almost. We are heading into Holy Week to end the month and start the new month with an Easter celebration. Spring is officially here...and the anticipation of summer is in the air.
