CAKe: Acts 1-4

It's that time of year again! The time when we get to start all of our holiday traditions and activities, not the least of which is our Christmas Acts of Kindness (everywhere...CAKe). Jeff and I started this tradition our first Christmas together as a family. At times, we would catch them counting their gifts or talking about their wish lists more than discussing how to make others happy or what they are giving to others. So we decided to start a tradition where we could focus our attention on others rather than ourselves. We wanted to remind the kids that this is a season of kindness and giving. It's a season to spread joy and love. It's a season to celebrate the Prince of Peace. This tradition has evolved over the years. We have modified the when and what and how, but we have always tried to do at least 12 (recorded) acts of kindness between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Some of the acts of kindness have been with us from the beginning and other acts we've added year to year. Tonight we knocked out 4 of our most traditional acts of kindness. We have been doing each of these almost since the beginning. We started with our community food box. I had picked up several non-perishable food items earlier in the day that we put in the box that evening.

Next, we headed to the Laundromat where we placed some quarters and laundry soap in various washing machines.

From there, we went to the Dollar Store and taped $1.50 on a few items throughout the store.

We ended the night at Walmart. This is one of the more favorite acts of kindness. The kids have enjoyed contemplating and searching for the family or individual they feel the Spirit has prompted them to give the gift card to. This year (and last) it was just Jonas. He thoughtfully wandered the aisles considering each person he passed until he found this couple. We passed them then he stopped and told me that he felt like he needed to give the gift card to them. In all honesty, we could give the gift card to anyone in the store and it would be received with thankfulness and joy, but I like that he felt led by the Spirit. I like that he didn't just give it to the first family or person he saw. The woman accepted the gift card with such surprise and gratitude in her expression. It always brings a little tear to my eye as I get to witness the reception of kindness.

Some of the acts of kindness are super simple and cost very little. Some acts require more planning or resources, but all of the acts of kindness we have witnessed have been received with a smile and sometimes even a tear. I think this is what I love most about this season. I love that the world seems a little brighter, a little kinder, a little more patient. I love that I see that in myself. It is a great reminder of the power of kindness and love...and reminder we could probably use more often throughout the year.
